Manifesto Upgrade: Heart and Connection over Thinking and Individualism

    WorkshopBeyond the CodeAdvancedEnglish
A new Agile Manifesto Value Heart and Connection over Thinking and Individualism While we value the things on the right, we value the things on the left MORE. Anyone watch Mr. Rogers as a kid? I recently watched the documentary on his life, and just wow. I <3 it. In the corporate world this is such a 'cheesy' thing. We tend to be comfortable with rationality and thinking showing up at work. But emotions - NO THANK YOU. No crying. Evenness. Thinking. Rationality. Uncomfortable suits and clothes, and solid handshakes. No hugs. Not high fives - at least not if you’re an executive. For awhile at companies I was working with, I high fived all the time - as a way of reducing formality in the workplace. And I announced it as such when asking for a high five. As a way of breaking down barriers. Of course at the time, I usually missed the mark on the high five placement. But I’ve gotten a lot of practice. The cool thing about high fives is that they are really the greeting of ‘equals’. No one is going to judge me by my high five ability - cuz it takes two. Was that a firm high five? Did her hand miss and it ended up being more like a hand kiss grab than a hand shake? Too feminine. Oh ouch, that guy crushed my hand. No executive presence. Etc. Etc. But this is not a talk about high fives. This is a talk about “Heart and Connection” over “Rationality and Individualism”. Here's the thing I've learned over the last couple of years: Suppressing and blocking the emotional parts of us at work BLOCKS OUR CREATIVITY! It blocks our heart connection to the work that we're doing. It stifles innovation. And wow, don't we all want innovation? I have been involved in agile transformations big and small, attended and built training from different frameworks and approaches - from ITIL to Certified Scrum Master. I've led business continuity programs, and had to ensure that a governance process can meet audit requirements. I've used multiple tools, implemented measurable IT process, transformed traditional project oriented departments to a product orientation. Worked with teams and executives. Facilitated alignment sessions with teams as large as 150+ and as small as just a few. You know what made the biggest difference in the success of the organizations, teams, and people I've coached? CONNECTION. I propose that connecting heart is the key to unlocking innovation. Connecting head to heart. Connecting heart to heart. Connecting heart to work. Connecting heart to company mission. It’s where the real innovation happens. We can do amazing things together. In this talk, I’ll share some ideas on HOW to foster this heart connection and I'll even help you connect to each other - heart to heart.

    About Nicole Oberdas

I launched my company to invite the notion that we can bring our whole selves with us everywhere we go. We can! We can bring people together, have stronger relationships with our family, friends, coworkers AND our work. Doing so will help create a more passionate world, it will inspire creativity, connection AND innovation. I focus on organizational, team, and 1-1 coaching, because I believe that change requires all levels to be involved and working on sustained continuous improvement. I prefer work in the relationship realm, but I also work with organizations on process, structure, transparency, and the tools they use to enable that. I help organizations create a simple cadence that keeps all parts connected and moving in the same direction.
